Structured Cabling

Structured cabling is the design and installation of a structured cabling system that will support multiple hardware uses and be suitable for today’s needs and those of the future. With correctly installed structured cabling systems, current and future requirements can be met, security systems can be updated with superior service, and hardware that is added in the future will be supported.

Structured Cabling System

Structured cabling is a network cabling system defined by building or campus telecommunications cabling infrastructure.

This network infrastructure design consists of a number of standardized, smaller network cabling elements. In a structured cabling system, there is a structure created by an access control series of patch panels and trunks.

It allows for a connection from network cabling hardware ports to a patch panel at the top of the rack. Then, that data cabling patch panel is connected to another patch panel through a trunk in the MDA. And the MDA (Main Distribution Area) is the main aspect of structured cabling.

It provides a place for all the MAC’s (Moves, Adds, and Changes) to be made with short length patch cords.

Structured cabling systems with conventional fiber-optic cable have proven to be an efficient, cost-effective solution for private networks.

Fiber-optic cables transfer data via pulses of light. The optical fibers consist of thin strands of plastic or glass less than 1/10 as thick as a human hair.

A second layer of glass, termed “cladding,” is then wrapped around the central fiber, causing light to continually reflect off the cable walls rather than seep out at the edges, so the signal travels farther without attenuation.

Since fiber optics use light to transmit data instead of electrical signals, the speed of transmission is akin to the speed of light.

What Are the Benefits of Structured Cabling?

With an organized, top quality network cabling the benefits are:
  • Moves, adds, and changes are much easier due to the fact that they are done in the MDA versus running long patch cords from equipment racks.
  • Potential for downtime is reduced as the potential for human error is drastically reduced due to this organization.
  • Cable and port tracing becomes a much easier job with a structured cabling system. This logical, organized approach not only makes changes easier, but it saves you time.
  • A structured cabling system will look much cleaner than a point-to-point method. Since the changes are done in the MDA versus at the hardware, the hardware can be cabled up and not touched in most instances. This allows the cabling in front of the switch to remain aesthetically pleasing.
